Classifications and description

Sandy Lane is situated in east Chester, running south from Boughton, a short walk from the City Centre. The designated bathing water is next to Sandy Lane Park and is bounded on the east bank by the park and on the west bank by The Meadows. The river is accessible at this area as the east bank is a shallow slope into the water with a concrete slipway at the northern end if wheeled access is required. Free parking facilities are available and there are good public transport links into Chester city centre. Sandy Lane Park includes a children's play area and Aqua Park with water features and picnicking. Managed toilets are available. An automatic defibrillator is available at the nearby Garage. The bathing water contains life buoys on each side of the river. There are several cafes, shops and hospitality venues nearby. A small ferry crosses the river at the north end of the bathing water, giving access to The Meadows, a large patchwork of grassland and wetlands popular with wildlife lovers, cyclists, dog walkers and other pedestrians. A community noticeboard provides local information. The River Dee Safety Forum provides a supportive community for local river users.
